Brandel Chamblee has this week taken aim at LIV Golf’s ratings and described the breakaway tour as “dying a slow costly death.”
The Golf Channel analyst was responding to a tweet from the Sports Business Journal’s Josh Carpenter, which showed that the Players Championship on Sunday on NBC had 3.6 million viewers (up from 3.5M for last year’s final round.)
In addition, peak audience for Sunday was at 7pm and had 6.2 million viewers (up from 6M last year).
Chamblee wrote in response:
“The PGA Tour is killing it and LIV is dying a slow costly death. LIV players have seller’s remorse. They want the meritocratic cachet that competing at the highest level confers but they have shown in their choice to play for LIV that they’d rather have the money first and sue for the cachet. Trying to blur the distinction between gift and reward.
The audience sees right through them, and chooses to watch those that prefer to play for history and legacy.”
Chamblee also referenced the poor ratings for LIV’s finale last year in comparison to the Player’s ratings, saying:
“Compare this to LIV’s finale last year that concluded in prime time on the east coast with Rahm winning…which drew 55,000 viewers. People tune in to sports that matter.”
Andre Chi may not be a name you’re familiar with, but it’s a name that you will see on this week’s PGA Tour leaderboard at the Valspar.
‘Acaseofthegolf1’, better known to some as Monday Q Info shared the remarkable story on X today, with Chi qualifying for this week’s event while being $1500 in the hole and with just $60 in his checking account.
Per Monday Q Info, Chi played D3 golf in college where he averaged 77, became an assistant pro at Deepdale in New York and besides a few section events, has never played a round before on a legitimate tour.
This week that changes, after Chi shot 66 in the pre-qualifying before firing a 67 in heavy winds to land a spot in this week’s Valspar field.
